What is Spray Foam?

Did you know that Polyurethanes have been around since

Spray Foam is produced using specialized equipment. Two chemicals are pumped independently through hoses and are mixed in the spray foam gun. The product comes out as a liquid and rapidly expands to fill cracks and holes. Batt and Poly Insulation that is frequently used in construction requires a thin plastic sheet known as vapour barrier to seal in air and to prevent moisture from travelling from outside to inside. Without this thin sheet, batt and poly in not effective as an insulation at all.

Open Cell vs Closed Cell Foam.

Do you know what spray foam your contractor is using?

Many foam contractor use both closed cell and open cell foams depending on the requirements of the building. But what is the difference. The first evident difference would be density. Open cell foam is considered a low density foam. When you touch open cell foam it is pliable. Open cell foam is roughly half the insulating value from closed cell foam. The other major difference is the fact that open cell spray foam requires a vapour barrier. While this foam has specific uses that it is well suited to, closed cell spray foam is better suited to our climate zone. Know what is being sprayed in your home or project.

Your Questions Answered.

Yes. Once spray foam has been installed by a professional company, its powerful air sealing ability prevents dust and pollens from entering and is helpful for people with allergies.

In Canada, it is safe for homeowners and pets to return to the home 24 hours the spray foam is completed.

Great question. This question should better be asked as “should spray foam be injected into my walls”. While it is possible to inject some foams into a wall’s cavity, most will not address vapour barrier concerns and then often fail to make a change. In some cases it can even make things worse.
